Structure design and Fabrication
The
project needs a mechanical or structural engineer who can determine the
materials and fabrication techniques to make a rigid structure that can
be easily erected and will remain safe and stable in playa conditions.
Cost should be minimized, but there will be sufficient funds to do the
job right if the Art Grant committee is convinced this is going to
work. Getting volunteer metalworking labor would be good, but again the
priority is to make something that won't fall down and mash a
participant. Skilled welders familiar with this type of construction
would be important to have on playa if repairs or changes are needed.
The engineer/designer needs to be the foreman on the playa during
construction, so that procedures are followed according to the design.
This means having to arrive on the playa during the week before the
event, and stay through monday for takedown. The easier
construction/deconstruction is, the less time this will take. Knowledge
of cranes, rigging, scaffolds and construction of heavy metal
things is essential, as is knowledge of costs.
The details and
cost of this structure are the main unknowns in this project. The
proposal must be submitted by Feb. 15, with a good story, costs, and
list of project personnel and their expertese. Making it clear that
this project really will work and on time and budget makes it more
likely that the grant will be awarded. In order to prepare the proposal
well, I would like interested people to respond early.
