Installation/Operation crew
Depending
on the method of construction of the support structure, about 6 people
will be needed during installation/takedown. Not all people would be
needed during the entire installation, but given the weight of the
metal pieces, four people would be needed to carry one of them while
others prepare where the piece has to go. Most would be needed early,
meaning the week before the event. A separate crew could do takedown,
but those who put the structure up would know best how to remove it.
Coming to the event early is actually very fun, as those around at that
time are hard core creators and makers.
In order to assure safe operation as regards laser eye hazards, an
operator needs to be present when the laser is on. The operation would
be from about 9:00 PM to 3:00 AM, prime time on the playa. Shifts will
be organized, so enough people need to volunteer so that nobody is
stranded there for too long. It's actually interesting for a while, as
you get to see people ohh and ahh, and answer questions and get
compliments, sharing excitement. The main task is to discourage people
from messing with the laser beam. It will turn itself off if they try,
but this stops the whole thing for a few seconds of disappointment. One
can see people about to do something, in the small area where they have
access. Operators will be trained by me, and informed of the hazards of
laser eye exposure and the answers to any possible questions. Signs
will be posted at the periphery to warn people not to mess with the
beam.
